Allison Cruse

What is your favorite service you offer?

I really enjoy a haircut. Particularly fun and eccentric , punky haircuts. I like a nice textured look. It seems like all my social media represents is various types of mullets, but I do enjoy a brush back and some of those mid length men’s cuts that take more shear work. I really enjoy lots of shear works and techniques that require more of that and maybe some razor work too.

What made you choose barbering?

Originally I wanted to be an esthetician and wanted to go to the aveda school in Minneapolis, but because of price I veered more towards cutting hair. In high school I cut all my friends hair (the MySpace era) , so lots of razor work and not the proper fancy razor, more like a bic razor you use to shave your legs. Cosmetology was something I looked at first , and again because of price I went to the path of barbering. It was more affordable and worked better with my work schedule. I could juggle two jobs and try to get through barber school, barbering also appealed to me because men’s cuts tend to be more transformative. It’s fun to go from long to short sometimes, and now more recently I’ve been getting a lot of gender neutral cuts from the queer/punk crowd. I enjoy those the most.

How do you like to spend your time outside of the shop?

I wish my answer was more interesting, but I usually clean the house when I’m off and hangout with my cats. I have two, Annik and Darwin (we call him thumby) and they’re like my stinky, hairy children. I enjoy gardening as well and have a huge collection of plants in my house, necessary for my mental health. I get great satisfaction out of caring for them and watching them thrive. In warmer months, I garden and have a variety of elephant ears I like to over winter every year.

What are two fun facts about yourself?

I’ve recently discovered I’m allergic to peanuts and I don’t care, because I still eat them anyway. Interesting , huh? I’ve also worked in the food service industry downtown for over a decade before this career path, and I’m sure a lot of you know me from that.

How would you describe a client's experience in your chair?

Thorough, probably loud and hopefully fun
